A Frozen Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick

Told in alternating chapters from both Anna’s and Hans’ perspectives, A Frozen Heart takes a sophisticated look at events of Frozen, exploring the couple’s backstories, motivations, and doomed relationship.

 

If you’re like most people I know, you’re favorite Frozen characters are people like Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Sven, Kristoff, or even Marshmallow. Me? I love Prince Hans of the Southern Isles.

 

I don’t know why, but I’ve always have a fascination with Hans. His backstory was unknown, he’s cunning, strong, manipulative, and handsome. So when I saw that a book with his backstory was coming out, I couldn’t wait to buy it and read it.

 

I was expecting a children’s or even a middle reader’s book, so I was quite surprised when I saw that it was a full on novel. But, overall, I loved it. Even though I’ve seen the movie first, I still think the book was just as good as the movie and I can’t pick a favorite.

 

Every chapter in this book alternates back and forth between Anna and Han’s perspective. It really gives you a backstory to Hans and why he did what he did, and to the real emotions and thoughts Anna was feeling throughout the movie. While most of the book strictly follows the movie line by line, there are a few conversations that were added into the book. Honestly, my favorite part of the book was an added scene between Anna and Bulba, the troll mother.

 

I am quite disappointed, though, that the ending didn’t change and Hans still turns out to be the bad guy (but in my eyes, he’s still a prince). His backstory did make me feel for him even more, but knowing his thoughts during the whole movie points to him still being evil… *sigh* He’ll always be a good guy in my eyes.

 

This book was very cute and fun to read, and way more sophisticated than I was expecting. It’s full of emotion and betrayal and love, and I think it’s definitely geared toward older readers and is more of a YA book than a children’s book.

 

Like the movie, the book is totally clean. God is mentioned a few times (in a lowercase setting), but I don’t think it’s necessarily taking God’s name in vain.
